The challenge

Alun Griffiths needed a fast, reliable key clamp guardrail solution for their A40 improvement scheme after facing major challenges on‑site. With CCTV points, Variable Message Signs (VMS) signage, and culvert areas (S14 and S19) to secure – plus the need to maintain farm access beneath the highway – they required a system that could be installed quickly across a wide, hard‑to‑reach site.

The biggest issues? Limited power in remote locations and no nearby water supply for cement. While most of our tools are battery‑powered, some stages required a stable power source – so we supplied our own generator. For water, Alun Griffiths supported us with a mobile bowser, allowing work to continue smoothly.

Despite the obstacles, they needed speed, durability, and guaranteed delivery – making Ezi Klamp the right fit for the job.

Our solution

Ezi Klamp worked closely with Alun Griffiths to design and supply key clamp guardrail systems tailored to each location along the A40 scheme. Key clamp was chosen for its strength, adaptability, corrosion resistance, and ease of installation in challenging or isolated environments.

Key project elements included:

  • CCTV protection: Key clamp guardrail was installed around multiple CCTV camera points to ensure safety, prevent tampering, and create a clearly defined boundary.
  • Culvert access (S14 & S19): Key clamp railings were fitted around both culverts, ensuring safe access for the local farmer moving livestock and equipment beneath the highway.
  • VMS: Ezi Klamp systems were also used to secure and protect the areas surrounding the electronic VMS boards along the route.

Overcoming site challenges

To tackle the lack of power supply across the project, our team provided a generator, ensuring uninterrupted progress without relying on external site resources. This allowed installations to continue even in the most remote areas.

Water access for cement mixing was resolved through excellent collaboration: Alun Griffiths supplied a mobile water bowser directly to each work location. This flexibility ensured efficient progress and highlighted Ezi Klamp’s adaptability on complex civil engineering schemes.

Across the project, all materials were delivered on time and installed to meet programme targets.

The A40 improvement scheme now benefits from robust, low-maintenance key clamp guardrail installations that support critical infrastructure across the route. From CCTV protection to culvert access and VMS signage, each system was tailored to site requirements and installed to the highest standard.
