1) Choose the right material for your environment

It’s important that your choice of material matches your site, not the other way around.
Steel is the most familiar material and it’s sometimes cheaper to purchase upfront. However, it corrodes up to 10x faster in coastal environments than inland environments, and you’ll need to earth it near electrical plant.

- BS 5393-1:2010 and BS EN ISO 14122-3:2016 for GRP access stairs
- BS 4211:2005+A1:2008 and BS EN 14396:2004 for GRP ladders
- BS EN ISO 14122-2:2016 for GRP platforms and walkways
- BS EN 13374:2013+A1:2018 for guardrails or edge protection on your structure
In line with accessibility requirements under the Equality Act 2010 and relevant building regulations, the handrail height on your stairs will need to sit between 990mm and 1.1m, extending the width of one tread and leveling out for at least 300mm at the top and bottom.

- Map out how your site is used today, and how it’s likely to change over time. New equipment or plant, changing production lines, and new vehicle or pipeline routes can all change what your structure needs to do.
